Asian Wrestling: Dahiya bags gold; Bajrang, Gourav win silver

Ulaanbaatar, April 23 : India had a fantastic day at the Asian Wrestling Championships on Saturday as Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Dahiya showcased a dominant form to clinch gold medal in the 57kg weight category. This was India’s first gold in this edition of the Asian meet. While Tokyo bronze medallist Bajrang P a (65kg) and Gourav Baliyan (79kg) won silver, Naveen claimed bronze in the 70kg category. Dahiya defeated Rakhat Kalzhan of Kazakhstan via Technical Superiority in the final to win his third successive Asian title, having won gold in 2020 and 2021 edition. Also, he became the first Indian wrestler to win three Asian Championships gold. In his opening bout, Dahiya trounced Rikuto Arai via technical superiority 15-4 and defeated local wrestler Zanabazar Zandanbud 12-5 before beating Kalzhan in the final. On the other hand, P a went down to Rahman Mousa of Iran 1-3 in the 65kg final to win his third consecutive silver medal at the continental meet. With his second place finish, he claimed his sixth Asian championships medal in a row. He has won bronze in 2018 and became a champion twice (2017 and 2019). In the 79kg final, Baliyan was trailing 0-8 and took the scores 4-8 before eventually losing to Iran’s Ali Bakhtiar 9-9 by virtue of bigger scoring move. In the 70kg, Naveen defeated Temuulen Enkhtuya of Mongolia via Fall to win bronze. In the 97kg, Satywart Kadian showcased a clear dominance as he outplayed Zyyamuhammet Saparov of Turkmenistan via TSU in the bronze medal contest. With one gold, two silvers and as many bronze medals on Day-4, India have won 15 medals so far in the tournament. BAV
