Agartala, April 20 : Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb when apprising on Home Minister Amit Shah at North Block about development of rehabilitation of displaced Brus of Mizoram in different locations of Tripura on Tuesday, settled Brus in Dhalai district launched agitation accusing the government of non-implementation of the quadripartite resettlement agreement. A large number of Brus have been settled at Hadukalakpara of Ambassa blockade National highway accusing the state government for delaying in implementation of the Rs 600 Cr package for development of resettled Brus in Tripura villages following an agreement signed in January 2020 among representatives of displaced Brus, Ministry of Home Affairs and the governments of Tripura and Mizoram. Accordingly, at least 365 Bru families were settled in Hadukalakpara last year from a camp in Kanchanpur in North Tripura. The Bru agitators alleged that the basic amenities remained in paper, as none of the commitments including setting up of school, regular supply of drinking water and monthly assistance of Rs 5000 was fulfilled that turned the life miserable for them. Later, District Magistrate (Dhalai) Govekar Mayur Ratilal reached the spot and assured them of fulfilling their demands soon and the agitation was withdrawn. According to report, when Bru families had been in protest for their basic needs in the resettled village, Chief Minister Deb was holding a meeting with Amit Shah describing the reverse story. However, the agitators made it clear that unless their demands are fulfilled as per the agreement soon, they would go for massive protest in the state and even in New Delhi. They alleged Tripura government had received the fund from the centre long back but didn’t do anything for them except bring dumped them into the location inside the forest where they have been leading an isolated life. The Bru Displaced Youth Association (BDYA) of dislodged Bru people from Western Mizoram and settled in North Tripura in October 1997 had written to on Minister Amit Shah early this month describing the miseries and sought his direction to the state government on urgent basis but, situation has not been improved anyway. In a quadripartite agreement, Tripura government has agreed to settle displaced Brus of Mizoram about 162 acres of land in 20 selected villages in the state and over 3000 families have already been shifted to different locations of North Tripura and Dhalai districts and another 3959 families are waiting to get settlement. The rehabilitation of displaced Brus started in April last year As per the agreement, each rehabilitated Bru family will get a 1200 square feet plot to build a house with an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh provided by the government, a fixed deposit of Rs 4 lakh for each family, a monthly sum of Rs 5,000 and free monthly ration for two years and schools in all cluster villages. However, Brus pointed out despite assurances of the package, about 90 percent of promises made in the resettlement pact could not be fulfilled even after two years.
