US hopes ‘healthy military’ ties with Pakistan will continue

Islamabad, April 13 : The US has a “healthy military-to-military relationship” with the Pakistan Army, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby has said, adding that the US hopes that this engagement will also continue in the future. The remarks from the senior Pentagon official come two days after Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the prime minister of Pakistan, replacing Imran Khan, who was ousted last week following a trust vote. Imran in the run-up to the no-confidence motion repeatedly accused the US of conspiring his removal. The US also “outrightly denied” the accusations. Addressing a press briefing in Washington on Tuesday, Kirby said the US has “shared interests with Pakistan with respect to security and stability in that part of the world”. “We do have a healthy military-to-military relationship with Pakistani armed forces. And we have every expectation that that will be continued,” Express Tribune quoted Kirby as saying. Responding to a question about Khan’s allegation against the US, Kirby said “I think you can understand that we’re not going to comment about domestic politics of Pakistan.” Responding to another question about the “possible involvement” of the Pakistan military due to the political turmoil, he said: “I don’t foresee any US military role here. And I’m certainly not going to, again, wade into internal domestic politics in Pakistan.” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had earlier said that a democratic Pakistan was critical to US interests.
