Chennai, Mar 19 : Chief Minister M K Stalin today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include Narikoravan/Kuruvikkaran Comm ties in the list of Scheduled Tribes in the State of Tamil Nadu. In a Demi-Official letter to the Prime Miniser, he drew his attention to the delay related to the inclusion of the nomadic tribal group- Narikoravan/ Kuruvikaran of Tamil Nadu in the list of Scheduled Tribes in the State. It is pertinent to note that based on the recommendations of the State Government, the Director, on Ministry of Tribal Affairs, in his letter dated April 30, 2013 had informed that the Registrar General of India has also agreed to the proposal for inclusion of “Narikoravan grouped with Kuruvikkaran comm ty” in the list of Scheduled Tribes in Tamil Nadu. Further, expert bodies like the Lokur Committee and the Joint Committee of Parliament have also recommended the inclusion of this comm ty in the years 1965 and 1967 respectively, he pointed out. The Narikoravars constitute one of the most deprived and vulnerable comm ties in Tamil Nadu and therefore deserve all constitutional protection and welfare measures envisaged by the inclusion in the list of Scheduled Tribes. “Though this has been the case and several representations have been made in this regard, the inclusion of this comm ty in the list is pending for a very long time”, Stalin said and sought the intervention of the Prime Minister to expeditiously include Narikoravan/Kuruvikkaran comm ties in the list of Scheduled Tribes in the State of Tamil Nadu.
