Moscow, March 8 : With more and more countries closing their air spaces to Russia it has left the country with leased aircraft it cannot use, and scuttled the aerospace industry partnerships with the West, Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday. While for Russian citizens flying to Europe or North America won’t happen anytime soon, there are growing doubts about they being able to travel to friendly countries like China due to the international comm ty’s ostracisation of the country’s aviation sector, according to aviation analysts. Eurocontrol has reported that both sides have together suspended some 350 flights, 300 flights a day by Russian carriers to Europe and 50 flights a day by European airlines to Russian airports. Russia has retaliated with reciprocal restrictions against the countries that have banned its flights. Apart from this the other threat looming large over Russian aviation is that companies like Boeing and Airbus, Russia’s main suppliers of commercial aircraft, have cut off Russian airlines from access to spare parts for their planes owned by Russian aviation. Boeing has also shut a design centre it operated in Moscow and temporarily closed its office in Kyiv. Most Russian commercial airlines’ planes are largely owned by leasing companies in the West who have until March 28 under European sanctions to terminate their contracts with Russian carriers. Several leasing firms, including Ireland-based AerCap, the world’s No.1 player, have confirmed that they have written to their Russian customers seeking the return of their aircraft. ACL1323
