Bengaluru, March 7 : Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday said both central and state governments should make suitable arrangements to enable students returning from war-hit Ukraine to continue their education and for some it could even be “for free”. It is good that the central government has airlifted students from Ukraine under Operation Ganga, but their future is uncertain as they cannot return to Ukraine because their educational institutions have been destroyed by the Russian army, he said. “It is the responsibility of the central government to rebuild the fate of the students who survived the war. “There are 50-60 medical colleges in Karnataka. If necessary, they take an entrance test and enroll students. Let each college give free education to 10 children,” Kumaraswamy said in a tweet. Spending Rs 50 to Rs 100 crore on Ukraine returnees will not be a hard task for Karnataka government as the total size of the state budget is Rs 2,65,720 crore, he said. “If these students become doctors, they can save the lives of many people and serve the state. There should be no commercialization of children’s dreams,” Kumaraswamy said. More than 20,000 medical students from India have returned home, including 800-1,000 from Karnataka, but there are still others to return, he said. The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority said that there are 236 Karnataka students still stranded in Ukraine and some of them will return on Monday as 12 flights have been scheduled for evacuation. So far, 448 Karnataka students have been airlifted to the state via Delhi and Mumbai, KSDMA Commissioner and Nodal Office Manoj Ranjan said. BDN ING
