Hubballi, March 6 : Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai received a Karnataka student who returned home from war-torn Ukraine via Poland at the city airport here on Sunday. A native of Yaraguppi village in the Dharwad district, Chaitra Gangadhar Saunshi was evacuated from Ukraine under the ongoing Operation Ganga. Speaking to media persons, Bommai expressed happiness on Chaitra’s return to her native village. “The parents of Chaitra were very anxious when she was stranded in war-ravaged Ukraine. Our Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police had met and comforted them, but still they were tense. Today their tension has vanished. They were very emotional while welcoming Chaitra. We are very happy on her return from Ukraine,” he said. Narrating Chaitra’s harrowing life in the war-ravaged Kharkiv city where she is pursuing third year medical education, Bommai said, “Chaitra was stranded for seven days in the bunker of the hostel in Kharkiv.” “Before reaching Poland, she faced a lot of difficulties. She walked at least 10 kms and made some arrangements to cross over to Poland from where she flew to Delhi with the help of Indian Embassy officials. Today, she has reached Hubballi via Delhi,” he said. Giving an update on Dharwad students stranded in Ukraine, Bommai said there were four students from the district, out of which two have returned and two others have crossed the Ukraine border and expected to reach Hubballi soon. Bommai, on Saturday, had visited the parents of deceased Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar at Shivamogga and consoled them. He also handed over a cheque of Rs 25 lakh to Naveen’s father and assured to give a suitable job to his elder son who is pursuing PhD. BDN GNK
