2nd Test Live: Jamieson sends Shaw back for 54

LIVE BLOG | LIVE SCORECARD

6:30 am: And it’s lunch. India 85/2 in 23 overs.

6:22 am: End of the 21st over, a maiden by Southee. Virat (3*) isn’t willing to take any risk with lunch around the corner. India 83/2.

6:13 am: What a catch! Shaw (54) went for a flashy drive but the edge was brilliantly caught in the slips by Latham, a one-handed stunner. Jamieson gets the wicket. India 80/2 in 19.1 overs.

Prithvi Shaw brings up his second Test half-century with a SIX over deep fine-leg, off just 61 balls. And it followed the fifty stand between Shaw and Pujara. India 80/1 in 19 overs.

6:08 am: End of 18 overs. India 73/1. Prithvi Shaw 47*, Cheteshwar Pujara 13*.

5:59 am: Pujara (7* off 30 balls) decides to shoulder arms to a relatively straight de Grandhomme delivery that goes on to hit his front pad, followed by shouts of lbw. Umpire shakes his head in disapproval, Williamson opts for a review. But the on-field decision stays, as the impact was outside off-stump and the ball was missing the stumps as well. NOT OUT!

5:56 am: Jamieson tries to bounce Shaw (44*) but the ball went well over his head, and even the wicketkeeper failed to stop it. The ball races behind the wicketkeeper to cross the boundary ropes – five wides. India 64/1 in 16 overs.

Kyle Jamieson introduced into the attack by Kane Williamson, and begins with a maiden.

5:46 am: Shaw began the de Grandhoome over with a four and ended it with a four as well to race to 43* off 46 balls. India 58/1 in 13 overs.

India’s fifty comes up in 11.3 overs, with a crunchy off-drive off Boult by Pujara, who collects his first four.

5:35 am: Prithvi Shaw (35*) continues to deal in boundaries – his sixth four in 40 balls, as the Indian opener dispatches de Grandhomme to the extra-cover fence. India 46/1 in 11 overs.

Bowling change for New Zealand. Colin de Grandhomme replaces Trent Boult.

5:22 am: Pujara (0* off 8 balls) seems all at sea against Boult, who is pitching the ball up to give it more air-time to swing and more importantly the line is making the batsman play. Maiden over. India 32/1 in 8 overs.

5:12 am: OUT! Mayank lbw Boult for 7. It was too full to flick and the bat hit the boot instead, which probably confused Mayank for bat hitting the ball as well. He goes for a review but to no avail. India lose their first wicket – 30/1 in 6 overs.

5:06 am: Shaw (23* off 23) not holding himself back from playing strokes, even on the up, as he did off the penultimate ball of the fifth over to dispatch Southee through the covers for a four, and followed it up with a straight drive for his fourth boundary of the morning. India 26/0 in 5 overs.

4:58 am: Shaw (13* off 16) looking confident. Finishes Southee’s second over with a guide behind point for four. India 15/0 in 3 overs.

4:54 am: India off the mark. Mayank takes a single to get the scorecard moving, and Shaw got five runs to his account in the over, courtesy a thick edge for four through the vacant third-man area, followed by a single. India 6/0 in 2 overs.

4:48 am: Tim Southee begins with a probing maiden over against Prithvi Shaw. Trent Boult to begin proceedings from the other end. India 0/0 in 1 over.

4:45 am: India’s openers Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal walk out to the middle to begin against New Zealand’s all-pace attack on a green-top wicket. This will be a test for the two Indian right-handed openers. Tim Southee to start for the Kiwis.

4:40 am: Both the teams line up for the National Anthems.

CAPTAIN TALK

Virat Kohli: We would have bowled first. We are ready for doing the other thing, the difficult things in Tests, especially in conditions that are not your own. Umesh comes in for Ishant, Jadeja for Ashwin – gives us more with the bat, and his accuracy as well. As batsmen we need to figure out how to score runs. That’s upto the individuals to score runs, and it’s all about executing that out here. We aren’t here to show that we can play in these conditions. We have done it before, and we just need to execute everything properly.

Kane Williamson: We’ll have a bowl. Some similarities – the Basin has green tinge too. Wagner in for Ajaz Patel. We came here, looked at the surface, and its history and figured all-pace was the way to go. There should be pace and bounce, so there’s opportunity to score as well.

4:15 am: Kane Williamson wins the toss and asks India to bat first.

4:05 am Calling the Hagley Oval strip ‘green’ will be an understatement.

3:43 am: Toss at 4:15 am and play to begin at 4:45 am.

3:37 am: Ground conditions looking pretty dry now as all the covers come off. Toss expected soon. Stay tuned.

3 :30 pm: Toss delayed due to wet conditions, but the good news is that it’s not raining and the covers are being removed.

3:10 am: It was drizzling a while back in Christchurch, and a rainbow welcomed the two teams. Stay tuned for more updates on the weather and toss.

3 am: Very early good morning from India. We are back and hope the Indian team makes a comeback as well in their second Test against hosts New Zealand beginning today in Christchurch. We, at Timesofindia.com, welcome you once again and look forward to bringing you all the live updates from the Hagley Oval.

Their pride bruised after a 10-wicket hammering in the first Test and technique exposed in adverse conditions, India’s famed batting line-up will face its hour of reckoning against a New Zealand pace attack, threatening to be relentless with its short-ball tactic.
Add to that New Zealand’s record of winning all but one Test at the green top pitch, and the odds go a little more against Virat Kohli & Co.
With the peerless practitioner of the short-ball tactic Neil Wagner joining Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson in aiming for the rib cage from round the wicket, there will be more probing questions on offer during the next five days.
What the Indian team would want is one among Aninkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara to show positive intent as their identical defensive game is bound to put too much pressure on skipper Kohli.
