Municipal elections- At 57.84%, Udaipur puts up poor show

Udaipur : Udaipur city fared poorly on the voter turnout front with the city and suburb areas recording mere 57.84 % polling till 5 pm in the municipal elections. Against the registered total 3.46 lakh voter residents in 70 wards of the city and suburb area, 183645 votes were cast. At Kanore, 79.36 percent polling was recorded till 5 pm.

The polling was conducted peacefully amid tight security at poll booths and the battalions deployed at various junctions of the city to curb any untoward incident. At Tekri, under ward number 35, people reported to the authorities about a BJP worker distributing alcohol to public and asking them to vote for the party candidate. People made video clips which went viral on the social media and police swung to action thus taking the man named Jagdish Sharma to police station. However, the authorities said that the accused was not caught distributing alcohol but bottles were found from his scooter that have been seized.

Despite efforts put up by party workers and a holiday, people seemed less interested in exercising their franchise, this being the reason for a 10 percent drop in the polling as compared to the last municipal elections in 2014 when 64 % polling was recorded.De-limitation too is being speculated as one of the reason behind the low turnout as many people complained of their names haved been cut off from their ward voters list and transferred to other wards. Large number of voters were thus unable to exercise their franchise rights while those who managed to find their names, did not show interest in casting votes in an alien ward.
