Former Sri Lankan President vows to lead new movement to protect SLFP

In a public statement, Mrs. Kumaratunga said all efforts should be taken to prevent the attempts by conspirators to destroy the party which has ensured the democratic rights of the people.

Her statement came as SLFP has not fielded any candidate for the Presidential elections next month and is supporting SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

SLPP was formed by breakaway group of SLFP in 2016 but is on the upsurge following popularity of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Mrs. Kumaratunga has vowed that she will lead the forces to protect the SLFP at the expense of her life as she led the party to victory in 1994 after 17 years of misery.

She said that SLFP pioneered in freeing the country from the shackles of imperialism and brought real freedom to the country.

President Maithripala Sirisena, who held the post of SLFP chairman, has decided to temporarily quit the post and maintain a neutral stand at the elections.
