Udaipur : For many, cow milk is completely out of the question. It’s difficult to digest, high in allergens and loaded with lactose that can wreak havoc on gastrointestinal tract. Enter goat milk, a nutrient-rich alternative that’s tasty, easy on the gut and far less inflammatory than regular cow’s milk. In a first, Udaipur administration has joined hands with many partners to supply goat milk to city people. It is in a joint collaboration with the animal husbandry department, Udaipur dairy and Nari Shakti Rajeevika Bahuuudeshiya Sahakari Samiti Ltd at Jhadol that would supply 100 liters of goat milk on a daily basis to Udaipur city in the first phase.
The goat milk would be sold under the popular milk brand ‘Saras’ and available at all Saras outlets in the city. A 200 ml bottle would come for the consumer at a price of 35 rupees. ” We launched the goat milk project after an intense market research. Looking at its medicinal properties, we realized goat milk is in high demand among people ailing from blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and other health issues. They are willing to buy the alternative milk however, its non availability in the urban area had been a major impediment” Qummer Choudhary, CEO, Zila Parishad told Udaipur Kiran. ” The bottle has a shelf life of one month and does not require to be kept in refrigeration. This is a trial phase and as per the public feedback, we may launch new variants such as goat milk powder, cheese etc. The daily supply quantity too may be increased from 100 liters as per the demand” Choudhary said.
Jhadol women torch bearers
The project is the brainchild of Udaipur Collector Anandi. In the initial stage, Self Help Groups (SHG) comprising of 200 women from 5 villages i.e. Makardev, Ovra, Richawar, Manas, and Goran in Baghpura Panchayat of Jhadol are engaged in the goat milk collection, procurement and supply project. A Bulk Milk Chilling centre (BMC)has been installed in central Baghpura. Animal husbandry department has ensured vaccination of all the goats used for extracting milk Another uniqueness about this initiative is that the entire process of milk collection from households to village level collection centre will be done by SHG women themselves including record keeping. Presently initiated only in Jhadol, the mission aims to enhance livelihood of the poor through procurement of Goat milk through out Udaipur from goat rearers .
Health Benefits
According to Ayurveda, goat milk is ‘grahi’—absorbent, and bowel binding; ‘laghu’—light to digest; ‘kshaya’—good for cases of emaciation, coughing and fever. It is also useful for persons suffering from ‘raktapitta’ or the diseases characterised by bleeding from various parts of the body and diarrhoea. A research from the National Dairy Research Institute has shown that goat milk potentially increases blood platelet counts and is thus beneficial for dengue patients.
