Tokyo, December 9 – A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Japan, injuring 30 people, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred on Monday at 11:15 PM local time off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture. The quake’s epicenter was located 54 kilometers underground.

Kyodo News reported that the agency warned of the possibility of similar or stronger earthquakes in the same area in the coming days.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sane Takaichi urged residents in the affected regions to stay alert for updates from local authorities and the meteorological agency for the next one to two weeks and to prepare for potential aftershocks. People have been advised to keep sufficient emergency supplies at home.

The agency said the earthquake occurred near a trench off the coast of Hokkaido and northeastern Japan, a zone where large earthquakes can happen due to the Pacific Plate sliding beneath the Honshu main island.

The meteorological agency later revised the earthquake’s intensity from an initial estimate of 7.6 to 7.5 and issued a tsunami warning for waves up to 3 meters high. In Iwate Prefecture, tsunami waves reached up to 70 centimeters.

The tsunami warning was issued about three and a half hours after the earthquake and was lifted at 6:20 AM on Tuesday.

Some parts of Aomori recorded seismic intensity levels above 6 on Japan’s seismic scale 7.

Following the tremors, the agency issued a special alert called the “Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory,” which activates after earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or more near the trench.

The agency said the likelihood of an earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher in the next seven days is very low.
