Hyderabad, April 10: In a significant development, 42 members of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), including PLGA battalion commander Sodhi Malla, also known as Keshav, surrendered to the Telangana police on Friday. Along with their surrender, authorities recovered 36 firearms and 800 grams of gold.
The surrendering Maoists comprised 21 members from the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), 11 from the Telangana State Committee (TSC), and 10 from the Dandakaranya Special Zone Committee (DKSZC). All but one of the Maoists were from Chhattisgarh.
Key figures who surrendered include Sodhi Malla, also known as Nikhil, and Chapa Narayan, the secretary of the state committee for the Jayashankar, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Peddapalli Division Committee (JMMWP DVC).
Telangana’s Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivdhar Reddy stated that the surrender of these leaders has effectively neutralized one of the three ‘magic weapons’ of the CPI (Maoist). He declared that following the surrender of all TSC leaders, the remaining TSC members are now inactive, marking the end of the CPI (Maoist) presence in Telangana.
As part of the surrender process, the Maoists handed over 36 firearms, 1,007 live cartridges of various calibers, two homemade grenades, and eight gold biscuits weighing 100 grams each. The firearms included five AK-47 rifles, four SLR rifles, three INSAS rifles, six .303 rifles, a 9mm Sten gun, two 8mm rifles, ten single-shot guns, a 9mm pistol, two revolvers, a BGL gun, and an air gun.
According to the Telangana government’s rehabilitation policy, the surrendered members will receive financial assistance: 2 million rupees for the senior commanders, 500,000 rupees for DVCM/CYPCMs, 400,000 rupees for ACM/PPMCs, and 100,000 rupees for party members.
Incentives are provided for surrendering weapons, and the total eligible reward amount for the 42 underground CPI (Maoist) members surrendering with weapons is 19.3 million rupees. The eligible reward amount for Telangana resident Kunjam Idumal, also known as Mahendra (ACM), has already been distributed via demand draft/check, amounting to 400,000 rupees.
The remaining 41 members from Chhattisgarh received an interim relief amount of 25,000 rupees, with the remaining funds to be distributed upon completion of documentation and the opening of bank accounts.
