1st T20I: Rahul, Iyer lead India to six-wicket win over New Zealand

BLOG | SCORECARD
INDIA BEAT NEW ZEALAND BY 6 WICKETS. India take 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Shreyas Iyer 58*
KL Rahul 56
Virat Kohli 45

Shreyas Iyer | Player of the Match:

We had lost quick wickets, so we had to build partnerships. We always knew we can score runs because this is a small ground. Looking forward to similar support in the remaining games as well.

Kane Williamson | New Zealand captain:

There are a lot of positives. It is hard to defend here and there was a bit of dew here. To score over 200 on a used wicket was a good effort. Credit to India for the way they played. Taking pace off seemed to be working okay, but it was tough to execute because India put us under pressure constantly. It was nice to build some partnerships. Guys came in and did their roles.

Virat Kohli | India captain:

We enjoyed this. Landing two days before and playing a game like this, it was fantastic. The crowd was right behind us. We never spoke of the jetlag in the team. We just focused on what we needed to do to win. We were looking forward to doing well. We have done well in T20Is in the last one year. You can’t be harsh on anyone on this sort of a pitch. I thought 230 was on at one point, but we pulled it back nicely

KL Rahul will keep the wickets today. He was fantastic in the recently-concluded ODI series, that India won, against Australia.

It’s time for national anthems. First up is India’s and it’s followed by the New Zealand.

PLAYING XIs:

INDIA: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul (wk), Virat Kohli (captain), Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami

Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar are the other two missing out from the Indian team. KL will keep the wickets today.

NEW ZEALAND: Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (captain), Tim Seifert (wk), Ross Taylor, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Hamish Bennett

CAPTAINS’ TAKE:

Virat Kohli (INDIA):

We’re gonna have a bowl first. Looks a nice pitch to bat on. It might be hard to pick the ball up initially due to twilight. We’re pretty much fine (from the travel) but we’re fine now. We’ve played 50-over cricket (heading to this series) and are ready for T20 cricket. The five guys not playing are Kuldeep Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Sanju Samson. The character to bounce back from difficult situations gives us an edge in alien conditions. We just gotta come out and play with belief in our abilities.

Kane Williamson (NEW ZEALAND):

It was a 50-50 decision with the track being used. We would want to get some runs on the board first and then defend it. The two guys missing out are Mitchell and Kuggeleijn. So we have two seamers, de Grandhomme. It’s a fantastic opportunity against one of the best sides, if not the best sides. It’s a chance for us to become a better side and execute our plans.

TOSS: India captain Virat Kohli wins toss, opts to field against New Zealand.

It’s toss time, folks.

KL Rahul’s last 5 T20Is: 54, 45, 91, 11, 62, 52. Can the dashing right-hander continue his sublime touch in the T20I series against New Zealand as well? Ahead of the match, India captain Virat Kohli suggested KL Rahul will continue as their wicketkeeper in the Twenty20 series against New Zealand as it offers them the luxury of playing an extra batsman. Rahul donned the keeper’s gloves in the last two one-dayers against Australia at home after Rishabh Pant suffered concussion in the series opener earlier this month.

Pitch report – BY Sunil Gavaskar and Scott Styris

It’s a boundary-hitting ground. No total is unchaseable. Looks a good pitch to bat on. There isn’t any grass on the surface. Seamers might not get much help from it. It’s a hard deck, so the ball should come on nicely to the bat and encourage strokeplay.

The match will begin at 12:20 pm (IST). We are counting down to the toss.

NZ will bank on Taylor’s experience today
