Kolkata, February 2: Police in Kolkata have arrested 10 people in connection with a violent clash that broke out between two groups on Sunday night in the Golpark area of South Kolkata. The police shared this update on Monday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Bobby Hela (28), Arjun Mallik (29), Sheikh Bacchu (38), Mukesh Paswan (32), Robin Das (29), Sujan Halder (19), Raj Halder (24), Gopal Government (29), Ajay Halder (29), and Sandeep Naskar (18). They will be presented in a Kolkata court.
The incident took place near Kakulia Road, close to Golpark, under the Rabindra Sarobar Police station jurisdiction. According to police, the accused created chaos and damaged police vehicles and motorcycles belonging to local residents.
Initial investigations reveal that the clash occurred during a picnic at a local club in Panchanantala near Golpark. Police and local sources said around 100 to 150 miscreants were involved. Gunshots were reportedly fired, crude bombs thrown, and sharp weapons used. Bricks were also hurled, causing panic in the area. Police recovered empty bullet shells and bomb fragments from the scene.
At least two people were injured in the violence. Ganesh Das reportedly sustained a gunshot wound in the chest, while Sanat Singh suffered a head injury. Both are undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital.
Local residents accused a gang led by a man named Sona Pappu of carrying out the attack. They also claimed the same group had caused violence in the area during last year’s Ganesh Puja festival. Expressing anger over security lapses, residents pointed out that the incident happened near the Rabindra Sarobar Police station.
Following the incident, Trinamool Congress councillor Baishwanar Chattopadhyay visited the site but was surrounded by protesting locals. He later stated that the unrest was due to a dispute during the picnic and claimed the situation was brought under control.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Bholanath Pandey and other senior officers reached the area. Pandey said a detailed investigation is underway, including examining CCTV footage. Police conducted search operations in the locality and neighboring areas, leading to the arrest of 10 individuals.
