Yellow Alert for Cold Wave in Himachal Pradesh, Rain and Snow Expected from January 29
Shimla, January 25 : Himachal Pradesh continues to reel under the grip of a cold wave. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for cold wave conditions in five districts—Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Mandi—for January 26 and 27. While clear skies are expected over the next few days, temperatures are forecasted to plummet, making the cold wave more severe.

Despite sunny days across the state, the chill persists, particularly during the early morning and evening hours when temperatures drop significantly. The weather department predicts a change from January 29, with snowfall anticipated in higher altitudes and rainfall likely in mid-altitude regions on January 29, 30, and 31.
Sub-zero Temperatures in Tribal Areas
Himachal’s tribal districts, including Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, are experiencing harsh cold waves, severely affecting daily life. These regions are recording sub-zero temperatures, with Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti emerging as the coldest place in the state at -11.7°C. Kukumseri recorded a low of -10.2°C, while Keylong registered -9.5°C. Kalpa in Kinnaur also recorded freezing conditions, with the mercury dipping to -0.9°C.
Cold Intensifies in Mid and Lower Regions
Cold conditions prevail in mid and lower altitude regions as well, with temperatures at Bhuntar, Siyobagh, and Bajaur hovering around 0°C. Even during sunny afternoons, icy winds force residents to rely on heavy woolens and heating devices. The chill is particularly biting during the early morning and nighttime hours.
Upcoming Weather Outlook
From January 29 onwards, the state is expected to witness a spell of rain and snow. Higher altitudes are likely to experience fresh snowfall, while mid-altitude areas will see light to moderate rainfall. The impending weather change could bring some relief to the ongoing dry spell but may also disrupt normal life, especially in remote and mountainous regions.
The state administration has urged residents to take precautions and stay updated on weather forecasts. Tourists heading to Himachal’s higher altitudes are advised to prepare for snowy conditions and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
