World Cup: Dhawan to remain under observation, Pant on stand by

NEW DELHI: Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who injured his left thumb during the World Cup match against Australia, will remain under observation for a week in England. The team management has also decided not to announce any replacement for the left-handed opener till the final assessment on his injury.

TOI has learnt that the final report on Dhawan’s injury confirmed a hairline fracture.

“Team India opening batsman Mr Shikhar Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored,” BCCI tweeted.

The team managements aim clearly is to try and give Dhawan a chance to regain full fitness so that they don’t lose his services. If Dhawan shows signs of improvement within a week he will be eased back into the team when fully fit. If not, Rishabh Pant flies out as his replacement.
Dhawan will miss the game against New Zealand on Thursday and the marquee clash against Pakistan on Sunday. It remains to be seen if he regains fitness for the match against Afghanistan on June 22.
Dhawan was the hero of India’s win over Australia on Sunday with a knock of 117 off 109 balls. His injury-forced absence would be a massive blow for India given his stupendous record in ICC events.
