Weather Alert: Brace for Rain, Snow, and Dense Fog Across India
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting significant changes in weather patterns across several states. Triggered by a new western disturbance, parts of North India are likely to experience rain, snowfall, and dense fog over the coming days.

Rain and Snowfall Expected in Northern States
A fresh western disturbance is currently active, bringing significant weather changes to the hilly and plain regions of North India. IMD forecasts light rain in the plains and scattered snowfall in the western Himalayan region through January 20, 2025. From January 21 to 23, rainfall and snowfall are expected to intensify.
Rainfall Alert for North India
From January 21 to 23, heavy rain is likely in:
- Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh
- Isolated rain showers in Delhi, northern Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh
In the hilly regions, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh, scattered rain and snow are expected to continue during this period.
Southern India Sees Rain and Cooler Temperatures
The southern states are also witnessing weather disruptions. IMD predicts rain and thunderstorms in:
- Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (until January 19)
- Kerala and Mahe (on January 19)
- Parts of Karaikal with light to moderate rainfall
These rains have already caused cooler temperatures and minor disruptions in certain areas.
Dense Fog Advisory for Multiple States
Dense to very dense fog is expected in several states during the night and early morning hours.
- Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh: Dense fog through January 19
- Rajasthan: Western parts on January 19, eastern regions on January 18 and 20
- Uttarakhand: Some areas will see dense fog on January 18
- Uttar Pradesh: Dense fog warning for January 18 and 19
The IMD advises commuters to exercise caution, as reduced visibility due to fog can impact road and rail travel.
Temperature Updates Across Regions
- Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh: Sub-zero temperatures persist, with significant cold waves reported in many areas.
- Himachal Pradesh: Minimum temperatures range from 1-5°C in certain regions.
- Northwest India: Temperatures are hovering between 6-10°C in most parts.
Impact on Republic Day Celebrations
The IMD has shared a preliminary weather update for Republic Day 2025 (January 26), indicating that cloudy skies and chilly temperatures may impact celebrations in parts of North India. Further updates are expected closer to the date.
Precautionary Measures
- For Rain and Snow: Residents in hilly areas should prepare for snowfall and slippery roads.
- For Dense Fog: Travelers are advised to plan journeys during daylight hours to avoid low visibility conditions.
- For Cold Weather: Adequate warm clothing is recommended, particularly for children, the elderly, and those in colder regions.
