First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Ready to Launch

The sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat Express has completed its speed trials, achieving a maximum speed of 160 kmph. The Indian Railways Board is now finalizing the routes and fare structures for this new premium service. The first sleeper train is expected to operate on the busy New Delhi to Howrah route, covering 1,449 km in under 15 hours.

Railway sources indicate that the government plans to introduce 30 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in the current financial year (2025–26). Of these, 10 trains have already been manufactured at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru. An additional 8–10 trains are under production at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. The coaches are being jointly developed by BEML and ICF.

Modern Coaches With Premium Features

The new sleeper version will feature 16 coaches designed to offer superior comfort for overnight travel:

  • 11 AC 3-Tier Coaches

  • 4 AC 2-Tier Coaches

  • 1 AC First Class Coach

Once launched, passengers can expect saffron-coloured Vande Bharat sleeper trains equipped with modern amenities, designed to provide a seamless and luxurious overnight journey.

Expected Fares

  • AC 3-Tier: Around ₹3,000

  • AC 2-Tier: Around ₹4,000

  • AC First Class: Around ₹5,100

Boost to Premium Train Travel

Following the success of Vande Bharat Express day trains, the sleeper version is poised to become a preferred choice for overnight travel, offering a fast and comfortable alternative to traditional long-haul trains.

With a target of deploying 30 sleeper trains this year, the rollout will take place in phases across various routes in India. As demand for faster and more comfortable rail services continues to grow, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to further strengthen Indian Railways’ premium offerings.
