Uttar Pradeshs Green Energy Revolution: Budget Allocates ₹2,104 Crores

Lucknow, February 12: Uttar Pradesh’s Finance Minister Suresh Khanna announced in the budget speech for the fiscal year 2026-27 that the Yogi government is rapidly advancing towards making the state a leader in green and clean energy.

An allocation of approximately ₹2,104 crores has been proposed for the development of additional energy sources, more than double the amount from the previous fiscal year 2025-26. This provision underscores the state’s commitment to energy security, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Under the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy-2022, the Uttar Pradesh Bioenergy Policy-2022, and the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy-2024, a target of 22,000 megawatts of electricity production has been set for the next five years. This goal is seen as a significant step towards reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and transforming the state into a self-reliant energy hub.

To date, 2,815 megawatts of solar energy projects have been established in the state, demonstrating the government’s active role in both policy-making and implementation.

The PM Kusum Surya Ghar scheme is being intensively implemented in the state, with a budget allocation of ₹1,500 crores. This initiative aims to empower farmers and domestic consumers through solar energy.

Seventeen municipalities, including Ayodhya and Mathura, are being developed as Solar Cities. This effort to strengthen solar energy infrastructure in urban areas will ensure broader access to clean energy. In rural areas, 520,000 solar streetlight installations have been completed, enhancing energy savings, safety, and convenience.

Under the Uttar Pradesh Bioenergy Policy-2022, 36 compressed biogas (CBG) plants have been established in the state, the highest in the country. This initiative promotes waste management and clean fuel production.

Uttar Pradesh has also taken significant steps in the green hydrogen sector. The Green Hydrogen Policy-2024 has approved the establishment of two Centers of Excellence in the state. This initiative will promote research and industrial applications of future clean energy technologies.
