UGC Bars Three Rajasthan Universities from PhD Admissions for Five Years

New Delhi, January 16 : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken strict action against three universities in Rajasthan for failing to adhere to the provisions of PhD regulations and academic standards. These universities have been barred from admitting students to their PhD programs for the next five years.

Focus on Quality Standards

UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the need for universities to maintain the highest standards in their PhD programs. “UGC is committed to taking appropriate action against institutions that fail to comply with the regulations. We are also in the process of reviewing the quality of PhD programs at other universities. Any violation will lead to similar action,” said Kumar.

He stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity and global reputation of India’s higher education system by identifying errant institutions and preventing them from admitting PhD students.

Action Against Specific Universities

According to a notice issued by UGC Secretary Manish R. Joshi on Thursday, OPJS University (Churu), Sunrise University (Alwar), and Singhania University (Jhunjhunu) have been barred from offering PhD admissions for the academic years 2025-26 to 2029-30.

The decision was based on findings by UGC’s Standing Committee, which concluded that the universities had failed to comply with the UGC PhD regulations and academic standards required for awarding PhD degrees.

Advisory to Students and Parents

The UGC has issued a public advisory urging prospective students and their parents not to seek admission to PhD programs at these universities. Degrees awarded by these institutions without UGC’s approval will not be considered valid for higher education or employment purposes.

UGC’s Ongoing Efforts

The UGC is also reviewing the quality of PhD programs at other institutions to identify any further lapses in adherence to regulations. Kumar reiterated the commission’s commitment to preserving the quality and credibility of Indian higher education.
