Udaipur Earns Global Recognition as a ‘Wetland City’: A Milestone for Conservation

Udaipur, January 25: Renowned worldwide as the City of Lakes, Udaipur has added another feather to its cap by earning the prestigious title of a Wetland City. This recognition, granted by the Ramsar Convention, places Udaipur among 31 cities globally, underscoring its commitment to preserving its wetlands. The announcement also marks a proud moment for India, as Udaipur and Indore are the only cities from the country to receive this accreditation.

The Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) is awarded to urban centers that excel in conserving wetlands while balancing urban development. This milestone highlights Udaipur’s efforts in safeguarding its rich aquatic ecosystems, which are critical for the environment, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.

India’s Contribution to the Wetland City Initiative

The Ramsar Convention’s Standing Committee granted the recognition during its latest meeting. The announcement was made by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on social media, celebrating Udaipur and Indore’s inclusion. The Wetland City Accreditation program was launched in 2015 at the Ramsar Convention’s 12th Conference of Parties. It aims to recognize urban centers making exemplary efforts to protect their wetlands while ensuring sustainable urban growth.

Udaipur is home to numerous wetlands, including iconic lakes like Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, Rang Sagar, and Dudh Talai. India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change nominated Udaipur, Indore, and Bhopal for the Wetland City certification. Udaipur’s proposal highlighted:
