Gujarat and Bihar Report Fatalities Amid Extreme Weather

Gujarat has been hit hardest by the extreme weather. In the past 48 hours, 14 people have died due to storm-related incidents, including wall collapses, lightning strikes, and falling trees. Several districts in the state remain on high alert as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall continue to lash the region.

In Bihar, 5 people have died after being struck by lightning during sudden thunderstorms that swept through the state earlier this week. Gusts reaching up to 110 km/h were reported, leading to infrastructural damage and widespread power outages.

Hailstorm Alert for 4 States

The IMD has forecast hailstorms in parts of:

  • Madhya Pradesh

  • Himachal Pradesh

  • Gujarat

  • Maharashtra

In Madhya Pradesh, hail and strong winds have been reported in the past two days. On Wednesday, 9 districts are under a hailstorm alert, while 34 districts could witness thunderstorms and rainfall.

Western Disturbances Shifting Climate Patterns

According to a report by Climate Trends, the pattern of Western Disturbances — storms that originate over the Mediterranean and affect the Indian subcontinent — is shifting. Traditionally most active during November to February, these systems are now increasingly peaking in March and April, delaying winter snow and reducing heatwave occurrences.

This change has caused record snowfall in March for two consecutive years, disrupting traditional seasonal cycles and increasing the frequency of off-season storms, experts note.

Advisory for Citizens

  • Stay indoors during high wind alerts and thunderstorms

  • Avoid sheltering under trees and near metal objects during lightning

  • Farmers should secure crops and livestock

  • Commuters are advised to avoid travel during peak storm hours
