People’s Action Party Wins 87 of 97 Seats Under Lawrence Wong’s First Leadership Test
Singapore, May 3 In a decisive mandate, Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has secured a two-thirds majority in the 2025 general elections, reaffirming its political dominance for over six decades. The election marked the first major political test for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong since assuming office in May 2024, succeeding Lee Hsien Loong.

The PAP clinched 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, including five uncontested constituencies. The opposition Workers’ Party (WP) retained its 10 seats, maintaining its presence but failing to expand its influence. Compared to the 2020 elections, where PAP won 83 seats, this result reflects an upward trajectory for the ruling party under new leadership.
Massive Voter Turnout and Mandate Reflect National Stability
With 2.6 million eligible voters participating in this year’s elections, voter turnout remained robust. The PAP garnered 65.57% of the popular vote, signaling continued public trust in its governance. The outcome reinforces Singapore’s reputation for political stability and long-term policy continuity.
Prime Minister Wong, who secured his own seat in the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, described the victory as a “humbling experience” and expressed gratitude to voters for their confidence. “We are deeply thankful for your strong mandate,” Wong stated in a post-election address. “We will work even harder to live up to your trust.”
Wong’s Leadership Style and Digital Strategy Resonate with Voters
At 52, Lawrence Wong led his first general election amid a challenging global environment, with economic uncertainties heightened by international trade restrictions. His campaign focused on economic resilience, digital innovation, and engaging youth voters — utilizing social media and online platforms effectively to reach a broader demographic.
Analysts credit Wong’s inclusive messaging and steady leadership for the PAP’s strong performance, especially at a time when geopolitical tensions and economic headwinds test global leadership.
With this result, PAP not only reaffirms its political mandate but also marks a successful transition of leadership, setting the tone for a new chapter in Singapore’s political landscape.
