Shardul Thakur Set for County Cricket Debut, Signs Seven-Match Deal with Essex
New Delhi, February 19 Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur is set to make his county cricket debut, having signed a seven-match contract with Essex for the initial phase of the 2025-26 County Championship season. The 33-year-old cricketer will add depth to Essex’s squad with his pace bowling and lower-order batting.

Excited for New Challenges: Thakur on His Essex Stint
Expressing his enthusiasm for this new chapter, Shardul Thakur stated:
“I am excited to join Essex this summer. It will bring new challenges and opportunities for me. Playing county cricket has always been a dream, and I am thrilled to represent the Eagles.”
Strong Domestic Form with Mumbai
Since making his international debut in 2017, Thakur has been in and out of the Indian national team. His last appearance came in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in 2023. However, he has been in outstanding form for Mumbai in domestic cricket, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. His all-round abilities have played a key role in helping Mumbai reach the Ranji Trophy knockout stage.
Why Essex Chose Shardul Thakur
Essex’s Cricket Director, Chris Silverwood, explained the club’s decision to sign Thakur:
“We were looking for a fast bowler who could also contribute with the bat in the lower order. Shardul fits this role perfectly, and we are delighted to have him in our squad.”
Essex has consistently sought depth in batting and aggressive all-rounders in the lower order, making Thakur an ideal choice for their setup.
A Promising Season Ahead
This short stint with Essex will provide valuable exposure to English conditions for Thakur while benefiting Essex with his all-round skills. It will be interesting to see how the Indian pacer adapts to county cricket and contributes to his new team in the upcoming season.
