Rahul Bhatt Discusses Working with Anurag Kashyap on Kennedy

Mumbai, February 12: Rahul Bhatt stars in Anurag Kashyap‘s highly anticipated dark noir thriller, ‘Kennedy,’ where he plays a former police officer. The character, presumed dead, returns as a contract killer to fight against the system.

In a candid conversation, Rahul shared his experience working with Kashyap. He noted that his character often communicates through silence and minimal dialogue.

When asked if acting with restraint was more challenging than expressing openly, Rahul responded, “I attended several workshops before filming. Anurag shared stories and research material with me. On set, I completely trusted the director.”

Rahul praised Kashyap’s collaborative approach, stating that he provides precise guidance on everything, whether it’s dialogue or silence. Working with him was an extraordinary experience.

Regarding disagreements with Kashyap’s creative choices, Rahul remarked that it is nearly impossible to disagree with him. He explained, “Anurag doesn’t give much direction to actors. He speaks less on set and allows actors the freedom to explore. He creates an environment where performances naturally emerge. If someone strays, he gently brings them back on track. That’s his best directing style.”

When asked if he carried any habits or emotions from his character into real life, Rahul mentioned, “For a while, I kept Charlie’s laughter with me. I enjoyed performing it. Now, my laughter has faded, but it stayed with me for a few days.”

Kashyap’s films are often associated with realism and brutality, but Rahul has a different perspective. He emphasized that Kashyap’s cinema is not solely about surface-level violence. It reflects the truth, showing that the violence depicted already exists within society and individuals.

He stated, “The violence in his films is not always shown directly on screen. Much of it is constructed in the audience’s mind. This is the uniqueness of his storytelling. He portrays real events and characters, holding a mirror to society. His films contain anger, but that anger belongs to all of us. His cinema reveals the true nature of society.”
