Polling for biennial elections to Bihar Legislative Council ends

Patna, April 4 : Polling for the biennial elections to Bihar Legislative Council from 24 Local Authorities’ Constituencies ended peacefully on Monday with 97.84 of voting. Chief Electoral Officer H.R. Shrinivas said here that the polling which began at 8.00 hrs ended at 16:00 hrs amid tight security arrangements. He said that final data of the voting percentage would be available only after the electorates who were in the queue, exercise their franchise. He said that Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLC S l Kumar Singh could not exercise his franchise as his name was missing from the voter’s list. Singh has made a written complaint with the election commission which would be probed. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Tarkeshwar Prasad and Bihar Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha also exercised their franchise during the election. Altogether 187 candidates had thrown their hats for the biennial elections for the Legislative Council held for 24 seats whose electoral fate was sealed in the EVMs. The electorates exercised their franchise at 534 polling booths during the day. According to the State Election Office cases were lodged against CPI-ML MLA Gopal Ravidas, BJP MLA Kavita Paswan and JD(U) MLA Vijay Singh for violating the model code of conduct. The counting of votes would take place on April 7. The maximum number of 14 candidates were in the fray from the Saharsa-Madhepura-Supaul constituency whereas the Bhojpur-Buxar constituency had the lowest number of only two candidates in the field. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was contesting on all 24 seats of which BJP was contesting on 12, JD(U) 11 and 1 seat was left for the Lok Janshakti Party (Paras faction) of Pashupati Kumar Paras. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has fielded its candidates in 23 constituencies and had left one seat for the Comm st Party of India. Of the 24 seats, Congress contested on16 seats. RS ARN
