Operation Sindoor Fallout: Schools Closed Today in Five Border Districts of J&K Amid Heightened Security

Jammu, May 7, 2025 In the wake of rising cross-border tensions following Operation Sindoor, educational institutions across five border districts in Jammu and KashmirJammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch—have been ordered shut for the day. The decision comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff amid escalated hostilities along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB).

Operation Sindoor

The closure was announced by Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar via an official post on X (formerly Twitter), citing the region’s volatile security environment following India’s missile strikes on terror camps located within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

What Triggered the School Closures?

The shutdown follows India’s overnight missile offensive on nine terror targets as part of Operation Sindoor, a direct response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. The Indian armed forces targeted high-value militant installations, including:

  • A Jaish-e-Mohammad base in Bahawalpur

  • A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) facility in Muridke

These strikes aimed to dismantle key terror networks involved in orchestrating cross-border attacks, underscoring India’s firm stance against terrorism.

Shelling and Civilian Casualties Escalate Tensions

In retaliation, Pakistan’s military initiated indiscriminate shelling late Tuesday night across the LoC and IB, resulting in the deaths of three civilians. The increase in artillery fire and exchange of weapons fire has significantly heightened the threat level in adjacent civilian areas.

Defence officials have emphasized that preventing further civilian casualties is a top priority, which prompted the preemptive closure of all educational establishments in the affected districts.

Advisory for Students and Parents

Parents and students are urged to:

  • Stay in close contact with school administrations

  • Follow updates from local authorities and the District Education Officers

  • Refrain from traveling near border zones unless absolutely necessary

Further announcements regarding reopening schedules or extended closures will be issued based on the evolving security assessment by local and central authorities.
