Accordingly, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R Sampanthan is to remain as the leader of the opposition.
The Speaker Karu told Parliament today that under the Parliament standing orders, he cannot change the post of Speaker.
The joint opposition, which has demanded for the post, however raised concerns over the decision and insisted that it be reconsidered.
The Speaker however refused to change his decision saying it was in line with the Parliament standing orders.
He said in accordance with the continuing long-established parliamentary tradition, the leader of the party which is not a party of the government and holds a majority of members in opposition, has been accepted as the Leader of Opposition.
