Madhya Pradesh Weather Update : Change in Wind Patterns Causes Temperature Spike in Madhya Pradesh; Cold Wave Expected from January 25

Bhopal, January 24 : Madhya Pradesh has been experiencing fluctuating weather conditions, with a noticeable rise in daytime temperatures across the state, including the capital, Bhopal. The shift in wind patterns, particularly the dominance of south-easterly winds, has led to milder winter conditions. On Thursday, seven cities, including Jabalpur and Khargone-Khandwa, recorded daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C, while nighttime temperatures hovered around 16°C.

However, this brief respite from winter is expected to be short-lived. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh cold wave is set to sweep across the state from January 25, bringing a sharp dip in temperatures that is likely to persist throughout the week.

Warm Weather Influenced by Cyclonic Circulation and Westerly Disturbance

IMD officials attribute the current warm spell to cyclonic circulation and an active western disturbance, which have been driving south-easterly winds across Madhya Pradesh. This weather pattern has pushed up daytime temperatures, with notable spikes recorded in several districts:

  • Mandla: 31.5°C
  • Khandwa: 31.1°C
  • Khargone: 31°C
  • Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, Seoni: 30.4°C
  • Betul: 30°C

Meanwhile, regions like Pachmarhi and Gwalior remained cooler, with nighttime temperatures experiencing a slight dip.

Nighttime Temperatures Vary Across Cities

On Thursday night, temperatures across the state demonstrated significant variation. Indore recorded a minimum temperature of 16.2°C, while Ujjain registered 13.8°C. In Bhopal, the mercury dropped to 10.2°C, whereas Gwalior and Jabalpur both recorded 12.4°C. The lowest temperature was noted in Pachmarhi, which dropped to a chilly 8.3°C, followed by Kalyanpur (Shahdol) at 9.1°C and Mandla at 9.5°C.

Other cities remained comparatively warmer, with minimum temperatures staying above 10°C.

Cold Wave to Return from January 25

The IMD has predicted a significant weather shift beginning January 25. The south-easterly winds are expected to give way to northerly winds, which will bring colder air from northern India into the region. This change is likely to result in a 2-3°C drop in both daytime and nighttime temperatures.

The fresh spell of cold weather is expected to intensify over the weekend, with a potential for dense fog in certain regions. Residents are advised to brace for colder mornings and evenings.

City-wise Highlights

  • Mandla: Highest daytime temperature recorded at 31.5°C on Thursday.
  • Pachmarhi: Lowest nighttime temperature at 8.3°C, remaining the coldest location in the state.
  • Bhopal: Nighttime temperature at 10.2°C, showing signs of cooling as the weekend approaches.
  • Indore: Mild nighttime temperature of 16.2°C, reflecting the temporary effect of south-easterly winds.
  • Gwalior: Cooler conditions compared to other cities, with nighttime temperature at 12.4°C.

What to Expect Next

With the western disturbance subsiding and northerly winds set to dominate, Madhya Pradesh residents can expect a return to classic winter conditions starting January 25. The IMD has also forecast colder nights and a potential for ground frost in higher altitude regions.

While the current warm spell has offered temporary relief, the upcoming cold wave underscores the state’s characteristic weather variability. Residents are advised to stay prepared, especially those in areas prone to extreme cold, such as Pachmarhi and Mandla.
