Loot accused die in police custody in Rajsamand

‘Judicial Magistrate initiate enquiry’

Udaipur : A 36-year old youth died in suspicious circumstances in police custody at Railmagra station at Rajsamand district on Thursday early morning. The deceased is told to be a history sheeter with 19 criminal cases already against him. Police had arrested him from his house in Oado-ka-Kheda village of Bhupalsagar area in Chittorgarh in the wee hours and had put him in lockup around 4am. Some time later, one of the guard who went to the cell saw him in discomfort and the accused was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. While speculations made round that the death had been perhaps caused due to torture, and that the cops tried to hush up the affair, authorities refuted the charges and claimed that the death had been natural and due to some health reasons as the cops didnt even touch him. It being a custodial death, a judicial enquiry has been called and a magistrate from Amet initiated the process.

Rama, son of Suda Oad was wanted in a loot case that took place at Surajbari temple in Railmagra on August 22. ” Police had arrested another accused in the case and our team had gone to Chittorgarh and arrested Rama from his home around 2.30am. He was fine and even had tea with the cops at a stall at the junction at 3.30. Since it was quite late, the accused was straight taken to the Railmagra police station and put in the lockup” Dr Rajesh Bhardwaj , additional SP Rajsamand told Udaipur Kiran. The team too went to rest and after two hours one of the guard went to look into the cell where Rama appeared to be in some discomfort, Bharadwaj said. After the news of the accused’s death spread, authorities sprung to action. SP Bhuwan Bhushan Yadav went to the station and took stock of the situation. Meanwhile, the autopsy was conducted by a medical board and later Rama’s family members claimed his body which was taken to his native place.

” The reasons of death would be known only after we have the postmortem report. Since he was in lockup, we have registered the case as per the rules of custodial death and judicial magistrate has started the enquiry” the ASP said. Police also said that the deceased had been a historysheeter and 19 cases including those in Arms Act, physical assault, robbery, loot etc had been against him.
