Honda Activa E is making waves in India’s fast-evolving electric scooter market — and it’s not just about performance. With an innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, Honda is directly addressing one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: the high upfront cost of the battery. This move could pose serious competition to established players like TVS and Ather, who still follow the conventional sales model.

What is BaaS?

Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) allows buyers to purchase the Activa E without the battery, significantly reducing the scooter’s upfront cost. Instead, users pay a low monthly rental for the battery — which covers usage, maintenance, and eliminates concerns around battery degradation or replacement costs.

This flexible approach makes EV ownership more affordable and hassle-free, and positions the Activa E as an attractive choice for budget-conscious urban riders.

Battery Rental Plans to Suit Every Rider

Honda offers three customized rental plans, catering to different commuting needs:

  • Light Plan:
    ₹678/month (excluding GST)
Includes up to 20kWh battery usage/month
Works out to just ₹21.87/day — perfect for riders with short commutes or occasional use.

  • Basic Plan:
    ₹1,999/month (including GST)
    Includes 35kWh battery usage/month
Designed for riders covering up to 40 km/day — a great fit for daily city commuters.

  • Advanced Plan:
    ₹3,599/month (excluding GST)
    Includes 87kWh battery usage/month
Ideal for riders clocking 100+ km/day, such as delivery personnel or long-distance commuters.

Honda Activa E: Price and Range

The Honda Activa E is priced between ₹1.17 lakh and ₹1.51 lakh (ex-showroom). The scooter offers a claimed range of 102 km per charge, making it competitive in the urban EV segment.

In comparison, rivals like TVS iQube and Ather 450X continue to sell in a conventional ownership model — with batteries included in the purchase price and no rental options. Honda’s BaaS offering could tip the scales in its favor for many first-time EV buyers.

Why It Matters

Battery costs typically account for 30-40% of an electric scooter’s price — and battery lifespan and replacement worries have been key concerns for potential buyers. Honda’s new approach makes it easier for customers to switch to electric mobility without the stress of long-term battery maintenance or expensive replacements.

With battery rentals starting at just ₹22/day, the Honda Activa E makes electric commuting more accessible — and could well push rivals in the EV market to rethink their strategies.
