NEW DELHI: Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson added unbeaten 121 runs for the second wicket as Sunrisers Hyderabad started their Indian Premier League 2018 campaign with a thumping nine-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals at home on Monday.
Sunrisers chased down the 126-run target comfortably in just 15.5 overs. Dhawan remained unconquered on 77 off 57 balls, which included a six and 13 fours, while skipper Williamson smacked a six and three boundaries during his 36 not out off 35 balls innings. Jaydev Unadkat (1/28) was the only Royals bowler to get a wicket.
Scorecard | As it happened
Sunrisers run chase started on a wrong note as they lost Wriddhiman Saha (5) in the second over to Unadkat. But it was the only blip in what turned out to be a perfect chase to a below-par total. Dhawan, who was dropped by Rahane at slips on zero, grew in confidence as he hit Dhawal Kulkarni for the first six of the match in the third over.
Williamson joined the party by hitting six off Unadkat in the fourth over as they took Sunrisers to fifty-run mark in 5.3 overs. The duo hit boundaries with ease and scored runs in quick time.
Dhawan completed his 29th IPL fifty off just 33 balls as Sunrisers reached 89/1 after ten overs. After that there was smooth sailing for the home team as they achieved the target with 25 balls to spare.
The Sunrisers produced a disciplined bowling display to restrict Royals to a paltry 125/9. The home side bowlers justified captain Williamson’s decision to put the opposition in as the Royals struggled to score runs on a pitch which got the turn as the match progressed. The Royals could not build partnerships and they crumbled under the pressure of a disciplined attack.
Sanju Samson top-scored with a 42-ball 49 and his 46-run stand with captain Ajinkya Rahane (13) for the second wicket was the highest partnership for the Royals. One-down Samson looked like he would anchor the innings after Rahane was out early but he also got dismissed in the 14th over when he was just one run short of a half century.
For the Sunrisers, which have one of the best bowling units in this IPL, Shakib Al Hasan and Siddhart Kaul grabbed two wickets apiece while Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, Australian pacer Billy Stanlake and Bhuvneshwar got one wicket each.
The Sunrisers got immediate success as the Royals’ opening batsman D Arcy Short was caught short of his crease with Williamson’s rocket throw from the mid-off rattled the wickets in the final ball of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s opening over.
Rahane got out in a wrong time as he was caught by Rashid at deep off the bowling of Kaul. A miserly over from Rashid was followed by Ben Stokes’ (5) dismissal off Stanlake as the Royals reached 71/3 at the halfway mark. Samson, meanwhile, was going steady for some time but wickets fell at the other end. Rahul Tripathi (17) gave him some company but did not last long as he became Shakib’s first victim.
Samson himself followed suit three balls later, giving Shakib his second wicket of the night and at that stage the Royals innings was in tatters.
Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 127/1 (Shikhar Dhawan 77*, Kane Williamson 36*) beat Rajasthan Royals 125/9 (Sanju Samson 49; Siddarth Kaul 2/17) by nine wickets
