India Shaken by Three Earthquakes in 10 Hours: Bay of Bengal, Delhi-NCR, and Bihar Affected
New Delhi, February 17, 2025 In a span of just 10 hours, three earthquakes rattled different parts of India, causing widespread concern among residents. The seismic activity began late Sunday night in the Bay of Bengal, followed by early morning tremors in Delhi-NCR, and a third quake in Bihar’s Siwan district. Fortunately, no major damage or casualties have been reported.
Authorities have urged people to remain calm and follow earthquake safety protocols. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, advising citizens to stay alert for potential aftershocks while ensuring that emergency measures are in place.

1st Quake: Bay of Bengal Jolted at Midnight
The first tremor was recorded at 11:16 PM on Sunday in the Bay of Bengal. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter located 35 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
Due to its significant depth, the tremor’s intensity on land was moderate, and no immediate reports of damage were recorded from nearby coastal regions.
2nd Quake: Strong Tremors Wake Up Delhi-NCR
Just a few hours later, at 5:36 AM on Monday, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi-NCR. The epicenter was located near Dhaula Kuan’s Lake Park area, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
The quake caused mild panic as residents rushed outdoors after feeling the sudden tremors. Some locals also reported hearing unusual sounds before the shaking began.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the earthquake in a social media post, assuring citizens that authorities were closely monitoring the situation. He urged people to remain calm, follow safety measures, and stay prepared for potential aftershocks.
3rd Quake: Bihar’s Siwan District Experiences Morning Tremors
As discussions over the Delhi-NCR earthquake were still ongoing, another quake struck Bihar at 8:02 AM in Siwan district.
Residents in the affected area reported mild shaking, with ceiling fans and household items swaying. A local resident, Durga Kumar Prasad, stated:
“We were inside our house when we suddenly noticed the ceiling fan moving. As soon as we realized it was an earthquake, we rushed outside for safety.”
According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of this quake was 10 kilometers below the surface, causing moderate tremors but no reported damages or injuries.
Authorities Urge Safety Measures Amid Seismic Activity
Given the recent surge in seismic activity, officials have reminded residents in earthquake-prone zones to:
- Remain indoors during tremors, taking cover under sturdy furniture.
- Avoid elevators and balconies during an earthquake.
- Keep emergency kits with essentials like water, flashlights, and first-aid supplies.
- Stay informed through official government updates and alerts.
Seismic Vulnerability: Is India Experiencing Increased Earthquake Activity?
India falls under seismic zones III, IV, and V, making several regions highly susceptible to earthquakes. Over the past few months, multiple moderate-intensity quakes have been recorded, raising concerns over potential larger seismic events in the future.
With three earthquakes hitting in just 10 hours, seismologists continue to monitor the tectonic activity in the Bay of Bengal, Northern India, and the Himalayan region.
