Indore, March 13: The Sanatan Premier League (SPL) kicked off its inaugural season at Nehru Stadium, Indore, with renowned storyteller Devkinandan Thakur officiating the opening ceremony. Officials from the league’s management and players from all participating teams were present.
Devkinandan Thakur commenced the league by performing a prayer on the pitch. Matches will be held from March 13 to March 15, featuring eight teams and over 120 players. Former Indian cricketers Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawla, and Mohit Sharma are serving as mentors, alongside fast bowler Umesh Yadav.
Chetan Sharma, former Indian cricketer and chief selector of the BCCI, is taking on the role of commentator. Madan Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, has joined the league as commissioner.
The winning team will receive a cash prize of ₹31 lakhs, while the runners-up will earn ₹15 lakhs. Additionally, every player will be awarded ₹11,000, regardless of whether they play one match or the entire tournament. The Player of the Match will receive ₹21,000 in cash and shoes worth ₹16,000. The Man of the Series will be awarded a car, and players winning the Orange Cap and Purple Cap will each receive a motorcycle.
The organizers also announced that the trophy will be taken to several pilgrimage sites across India after the tournament concludes. Indore was chosen as the host city due to its proximity to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple in Ujjain.
Spokesperson for the Sanatan Premier League, Sumendra Tiwari, stated, “We aim to provide opportunities for players who primarily play cricket in villages or on the streets. We want to give them a larger platform. Devkinandan Thakur initiated the league to keep underprivileged children and youth away from wrong paths.”
He added, “Children who might have turned to drugs or other harmful activities will now have a chance to channel their energy positively. This tournament could play a significant role in giving direction to their lives.”
