Himachal Pradesh Weather Update: Rain and Snow Expected from January 29 to February 1
Shimla, January 26: Himachal Pradesh is set to experience a change in weather as rain and snowfall are expected across the state from January 29 to February 1 due to an active Western Disturbance. This weather shift is likely to intensify the cold wave, with both maximum and minimum temperatures dropping significantly.
The Meteorological Center, Shimla, has predicted light to moderate rain in mid-altitude areas and snowfall in higher regions, including Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra.

January Records 75% Below-Normal Rainfall
The state has witnessed 75% less rainfall than usual in January, raising concerns of drought-like conditions. Farmers and orchardists have expressed worry over the lack of precipitation, which is critical for crop growth. Experts emphasized that adequate cold and moisture are essential for the healthy development of apple orchards, making the upcoming rain and snowfall crucial for agriculture in the region.
Sunny Days Before the Weather Shift
For the past few days, Himachal Pradesh has experienced clear skies, leading to a rise in maximum temperatures. On Sunday, areas like Shimla enjoyed sunny weather, with fog in the plains also subsiding. The forecast indicates continued clear weather on January 27 and 28, but an alert for cold waves has been issued for select areas over the next 24 hours.
Extreme Cold in Tribal Regions; Shimla Warmer at Night
A stark contrast in temperatures is evident across the state. Tribal regions such as Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Chamba’s Pangi continue to experience severe cold, with temperatures staying below freezing for the past two months.
On Sunday, Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti recorded a minimum temperature of -10.9°C, while Shimla recorded a warmer 8°C, which is 4.4°C above normal. In contrast, minimum temperatures in Sundernagar and Una were 1.9°C, Mandi 3.2°C, Kangra and Bilaspur 4°C, Dharamshala 5.9°C, and Nahan 7.1°C.
Frozen Water Sources in Tribal Areas
The persistent sub-zero temperatures in tribal districts have caused natural water sources like rivers and streams to freeze, further exacerbating challenges for residents.
Tourists Await Snowfall
Snowfall in Himachal Pradesh is a major attraction for tourists, but this year’s lack of snow post-New Year has led to a decline in visitors to hill stations like Shimla, Manali, and Dalhousie. The upcoming spell of snow is expected to rejuvenate tourism in these popular destinations.
