Haryana Weather Update: Rain, Hail Hit 12 Districts; Over 15 Lakh Tonnes of Wheat Damaged, Temperature Drops Below 40°C

Thunderstorms and unseasonal rain continue to disrupt life and agriculture in Haryana; IMD extends alert till May 7 across multiple districts.

Rain, Hailstorms Lash 12 Districts; Panipat and Yamunanagar Bear the Brunt

Bhiwani, May 5 Haryana experienced intense rainfall and hailstorms on Sunday night, affecting at least 12 districts including Ambala, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Yamunanagar, Rohtak, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Sonipat, and Nuh. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panipat and Yamunanagar witnessed hailstorms, leading to significant crop damage and agricultural loss.

In an especially concerning development, more than 15 lakh tonnes of wheat stored in open markets and procurement centres were reportedly soaked in the rain, raising concerns over post-harvest losses and procurement delays in one of India’s major grain-producing states.

Haryana Weather

The IMD has extended weather alerts for Haryana through May 7, forecasting continued thunderstorms, strong winds, and intermittent showers, especially during evening hours.

Temperature Dips Below Seasonal Norms; Mahendragarh Warmest at 37.5°C

As the rain swept through the state, day temperatures fell significantly, with the maximum temperature in most districts falling below 40°C, offering temporary relief from the scorching summer heat. Mahendragarh, however, remained the warmest location on Sunday with a maximum temperature of 37.5°C, still below the heatwave threshold.

In Fatehabad, the storm was accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, adding to the severity of the weather event. Residents reported brief power outages, and local authorities have been deployed to assess damage and initiate clean-up operations.

District-Wise Rainfall Forecast: Alert Breakdown from May 5 to May 7

The IMD has provided a detailed district-level precipitation forecast to help authorities and residents plan ahead. Here’s a breakdown of expected weather activity across Haryana for the next three days:

May 5

  • High likelihood (50–75%) of rain in: Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar

  • Moderate likelihood (25–50%) in: Kurukshetra, Karnal, Kaithal, Panipat, Sonipat

  • Lower likelihood (up to 25%) in: Other districts

May 6

  • 25% chance of rain in: Sirsa, Fatehabad, Jind, Hisar

  • 25–50% chance in: Remaining districts

May 7

  • 25% chance of rain in: Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Kaithal

  • Dry weather expected in: Most other districts

This forecast indicates intermittent weather disturbances, largely influenced by two successive western disturbances, impacting the northwestern plains and the foothills.

Expert Outlook: Weather to Remain Unsettled Until May 7

Dr. Madan Kheechad, Head of the Department of Agricultural Meteorology at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, stated that variable weather patterns will persist in the region till at least May 7.

“The interaction between north-easterly winds and active western disturbances will lead to partly cloudy skies, moderate winds, and chances of light to moderate rainfall, especially during the evening hours,” Dr. Kheechad said.

He added that this phase will likely keep daytime temperatures lower than average, although no major drop in night temperatures is expected. The conditions may impact harvesting and post-harvest handling, prompting the agriculture department to issue advisories for farmers regarding crop protection and moisture management.

Agriculture Impact and Public Safety Measures

The hailstorms and rainfall have emerged as a significant concern for farmers and mandi operators. Preliminary reports from Panipat, Yamunanagar, and Kaithal suggest extensive waterlogging in grain markets, with many stacks of procured wheat exposed to rain.

District administrations have been instructed to:

  • Cover stored grains immediately

  • Deploy pumps to remove water from procurement centers

  • Issue safety alerts to residents, especially regarding lightning risks

The State Agricultural Department is currently compiling data on damaged produce, which will be submitted to the government for compensation and insurance claims.

The Power Department has also been directed to ensure rapid restoration of electricity in storm-affected zones, while municipal bodies continue clearing blocked roads and drainage systems.

Conclusion

With 12 districts already impacted and the IMD extending alerts till May 7, Haryana remains on high weather alert. The combination of hailstorms, crop damage, and falling temperatures has disrupted agricultural and daily life, especially in Panipat, Yamunanagar, and surrounding regions.

Authorities have ramped up emergency services and are working with weather agencies and farmers to minimize further losses. Citizens are urged to stay indoors during storms, avoid open fields during lightning activity, and follow local advisories closely.
