Hariman Sharma Honored with Padma Shri for Revolutionizing Apple Farming in Extreme Heat
Shimla, January 26: On the eve of Republic Day, the central government recognized unsung heroes from across the nation for their extraordinary contributions to society. Among the awardees is Hariman Sharma, a visionary farmer from Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, who was honored with the Padma Shri for his groundbreaking innovation in apple farming. Hariman developed the HRMN-99 apple variety, capable of thriving in scorching temperatures of 40–46°C, defying the traditional norms of apple cultivation.
Revolutionizing Apple Cultivation in Hot Climates
In Himachal Pradesh, apple farming has traditionally been confined to snow-laden regions like Shimla, Kullu, Kinnaur, Mandi, and Chamba. However, Hariman Sharma’s innovation brought apple cultivation to the lower, warmer regions of Himachal, including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Solan, and Kangra.
Sharma began his research in 1999, and by 2007, he had successfully developed the HRMN-99 apple variety, which could withstand extreme heat. This breakthrough changed the geography of apple farming, offering new possibilities for farmers in warmer climates.
A Global Success Story
Hariman introduced the HRMN-99 apple saplings to farmers across India, and its popularity skyrocketed. Today, over 1.4 million saplings of HRMN-99 have been planted not just in India but also in countries like Germany, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Oman.
Scientists from the National Innovation Foundation conducted extensive research on the variety and confirmed its adaptability. Saplings planted in 23 of India’s 29 states have already started bearing fruit, showcasing the variety’s versatility and reliability.
National and International Recognition
Hariman Sharma’s relentless efforts have earned him 15 national awards and 10 state-level honors for his agricultural innovations. Beyond apples, he has successfully introduced crops like mangoes, kiwis, pomegranates, and lychees to non-traditional areas. His work has inspired farmers in seven districts of Himachal Pradesh to plant over 100,000 apple saplings, transforming the region’s agricultural landscape.
Humble Beginnings, Unstoppable Dedication
Born on April 4, 1956, in a small village in Ghumarwin Tehsil, Bilaspur, Hariman faced hardships early in life. His mother passed away just three days after his birth, and he was raised by adoptive parents. Despite studying only up to matriculation, Hariman’s determination and innovative spirit propelled him to success in agriculture.
Scientific Community Acknowledges His Contributions
Hariman’s success caught the attention of scientists and policymakers alike. He was appointed as a member of the Executive Committee of Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Solan. The HRMN-99 variety has been recognized as a breakthrough in alternative agriculture, with scientists validating its potential.
A Moment of Pride: Padma Shri Award
Expressing his gratitude for the Padma Shri, Hariman Sharma said, “This is the greatest achievement of my life, and I dedicate it to the farmers of Himachal Pradesh and India. This honor motivates me to continue innovating and contributing to the agricultural community.”
