New Delhi: In an innovative move to improve road safety and curb rampant traffic violations, the Delhi Traffic Police has launched a citizen-friendly mobile application — ‘Prahari’ — that empowers residents to report traffic rule breakers and earn monthly cash rewards of up to ₹50,000.
With Delhi’s roads plagued by common offenses like riding without helmets, red-light jumping, and wrong-way driving, this app turns vigilant citizens into virtual traffic enforcers — and pays them for it.
What Is the Prahari App?
‘Prahari’ is a smartphone app developed by the Delhi Traffic Police, available for Android users via the Google Play Store. The app enables everyday commuters to actively participate in traffic monitoring by capturing and submitting evidence of traffic violations in real-time.
Once a violation is reported — complete with a photo, date, time, and location — Delhi Police verifies the submission. If validated, a challan (fine notice) is issued to the violator, and the reporting citizen earns points toward cash rewards.
How to Use the Prahari App and Start Earning
Download the Prahari app from the Google Play Store.
Register using your mobile number.
Start reporting violations by uploading a photo with necessary details:
Clear image of the offense
Date and time of incident
Accurate location
Reports are reviewed by traffic authorities. If approved, the complaint is acted upon, and points are awarded to the user who submitted it.
Monthly Rewards Up to ₹50,000
The app has a leaderboard-based reward system, where top contributors each month are financially rewarded:
🥇 1st place: ₹50,000
🥈 2nd place: ₹25,000
🥉 3rd place: ₹20,000
🏅 4th place: ₹15,000
As participation increases, some users have even formed WhatsApp groups to coordinate efforts, avoid duplicating reports, and strategically monitor high-violation zones for better chances of winning.
Violations You Can Report via the Prahari App
You can report a wide variety of traffic offenses, including:
Riding without a helmet
Jumping red lights
Driving while on the phone
Wrong-side driving
Vehicle overloading
Use of illegal or modified exhausts
Dangerous or stunt driving
These violations not only cause inconvenience but also significantly contribute to Delhi’s road accidents and congestion. The Prahari app gives citizens the power — and motivation — to help change that.
Not the First, But the Boldest Attempt Yet
While this isn’t the first civic reporting initiative in India — Pune’s ‘Whistleblower Scheme’ also gained traction for targeting illegal bike silencers — Delhi’s Prahari app raises the bar by combining wider scope, real-time digital reporting, and substantial monthly cash rewards.
In Pune, the initiative led to the seizure and destruction of over 570 illegal silencers, proving that public participation can have a measurable impact.
A Win-Win for Delhi’s Roads
By incentivizing good behavior and encouraging civic responsibility, the Delhi Police is not only addressing manpower limitations but also empowering residents to make their city safer. With Prahari, technology, enforcement, and citizen action come together to tackle a major urban issue.
So if you’re on Delhi roads and spot a violator, your next photo could make the city safer — and put money in your pocket.
