Raipur, May 7, 2025 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather alert for southern Chhattisgarh, warning of rain, thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds particularly in Bastar division. In contrast, central and northern regions of the state, including Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg, are expected to witness rising temperatures starting today.
Despite recent mild conditions, a shift in the weather pattern is underway due to the influence of an active Western Disturbance and an extended trough line, spanning from southwest Rajasthan to northern Bangladesh, passing through Chhattisgarh.

Rain and Storm Likely in Bastar, Thunderstorms in Surguja
According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall with thunder is expected across Bastar, Dantewada, Kondagaon, Sukma, and Bijapur districts over the next five days. Wind speeds may reach 30–40 km/h, accompanied by localized hailstorms.
In the Surguja division, including Ambikapur, light rain and dust storms are likely in isolated areas. IMD data shows that temperatures here have dropped notably, with Ambikapur recording 34.8°C max and 19.9°C min, both 5°C below seasonal averages.
Temperature Set to Rise in Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg
While parts of the state remain cool, a gradual increase in temperature is forecast for Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg divisions. Over the next 4 days, the maximum temperature in these regions may climb by 2–3°C.
-
Raipur: Tuesday saw a max of 38.6°C (2.5°C below normal) and a min of 24.7°C
-
Bilaspur: Max temp was 37.4°C, about 5.5°C below normal, while the min stood at 23.4°C
-
GPM (Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi): Max 36.1°C, Min 20°C, nearly 5°C below average
Clear skies were reported on Wednesday morning in Raipur, with conditions expected to shift to partly cloudy with possible thunderstorms and light rain during the day. The temperature may peak around 39°C.
What’s Causing the Weather Shift?
The ongoing fluctuations are attributed to:
-
A strong Western Disturbance originating from the Caspian and Mediterranean seas
-
A trough system passing through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and up to Bangladesh
-
Interaction between moist Bay of Bengal winds and south-westerly flows
These systems are bringing cooler air, moisture, and instability, leading to rain and storm activity in southern and northeastern Chhattisgarh, while the central belt is gradually warming.
