Bumper Mango Yield Expected in Khunti as Trees Laden with Blossoms

Khunti, February 19, 2025 The mango orchards of Khunti district, known for their exceptional fruit production, are brimming with lush blossoms (manjars) this season, signaling a record-breaking yield of Amrapali, Malda, Dasheri, and Biju mangoes. Farmers and experts believe that if weather conditions remain favorable and timely rainfall occurs, the district could witness an unprecedented mango harvest. However, a prolonged dry spell could lead to the drying of mango blossoms, and an outbreak of mildew disease (Madhua rog) may adversely affect production.

Farmers Optimistic About Bumper Yield

Prominent mango grower and former Zilla Parishad member, Premjit Bhengra, emphasized that March-April rainfall is crucial for a healthy mango yield. He warned that hailstorms during the flowering and fruit-setting stages could significantly damage the crop. “If the weather remains supportive, Jharkhand will witness an abundant mango season,” he added.

Khunti’s Climate: Ideal for Mango Cultivation

Khunti has carved a distinct identity in mango production. While the district is renowned for Biju mangoes, it also produces high-quality Dasheri and Amrapali varieties. The taste and quality of Khunti mangoes have gained popularity beyond Jharkhand, reaching West Bengal, Odisha, and even Nepal.

Agricultural scientists consider Khunti’s climate and geographical conditions highly favorable for mango cultivation. The region’s hilly terrain and suitable soil composition create optimal conditions for growing the ‘King of Fruits’.

Torpah: The Mango Hub of Jharkhand

  • Torpa block in Khunti district is considered Jharkhand’s mango hub.
  • Under the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana, nearly 4,000 farmers in Torpa are engaged in mango farming.
  • Torpa has the highest number of mango orchards in Jharkhand, with 700-800 acres of farmland dedicated to mango cultivation.

Expert Advice for Farmers

Senior scientist Dr. Deepak Rai, Chairman of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Torpa, confirmed that the current bloom is highly promising. However, he urged farmers to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against Bhunga insects, which suck the sap from blossoms, leading to yield loss.

Recommended Solution:
🔹 Use Imidacloprid 17.8% SL Mix 0.3 ml per liter of water and spray it over mango blossoms to prevent pest infestation.

For further guidance and technical support, farmers can contact the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Diankel, Torpa Block.

With favorable weather and proactive farming practices, Khunti is poised to deliver one of the best mango harvests in recent years, reinforcing its status as a leading mango-producing district in Jharkhand.
