BSNL Expands 4G Network Amid Subscriber Loss; Introduces Fiber TV in Rajasthan
State-owned telecom operator BSNL has made significant strides by expanding its 4G network to over 65,000 sites across India. This marks a major milestone in its journey to achieving 100,000 operational 4G sites by mid-2025, promising improved connectivity, faster speeds, and enhanced coverage for users in these areas.

Subscriber Challenges and Network Improvements
The announcement of BSNL’s network expansion comes as the company grapples with the loss of over 300,000 subscribers in November, according to TRAI data. Frequent complaints of call drops, disconnections, and connectivity issues have plagued the network. Acknowledging these challenges, BSNL officials have assured customers that these issues will be resolved by February 2025, as part of their broader network enhancement plans.
Fiber TV Launch in Rajasthan
In a bid to diversify its offerings, BSNL has introduced Internet Fiber TV (IFTV) services in Rajasthan. This follows a successful pilot program in Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and subsequent rollouts in Punjab, Chandigarh, and Gujarat.
Key Features of BSNL IFTV:
- India’s first fiber-based Internet TV service.
- Access to over 500 live TV channels without additional costs for Bharat Fiber users.
- Seamless, interruption-free streaming.
The service aims to redefine digital entertainment for BSNL’s customers, providing a competitive edge against private telecom operators.
Market Competition: Voice-Only Plans by Competitors
In parallel, private players like Airtel, Jio, and Vi have introduced voice and SMS-only plans, catering to users who do not require data services. These plans address a gap in the market, offering affordable options for basic communication without bundling unnecessary data.
A Strategic Push Forward
BSNL’s dual focus on expanding its 4G footprint and launching innovative services like Fiber TV underscores its commitment to retaining and regaining market share. While the company faces challenges, these initiatives reflect its efforts to remain relevant in a highly competitive telecom landscape.
