Dhaka, March 18: The decision of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to withdraw from the T20 World Cup 2026 is back in the spotlight. The newly formed government of Bangladesh has initiated an investigation into this matter.
Youth and Sports Minister Aminul Islam announced that a new inquiry committee will be established after Eid. This committee will investigate whether the decision to withdraw from the tournament, hosted by India and Sri Lanka, was a result of failures in sports diplomacy.
Minister Aminul Islam stated that the government aims to understand if this situation could have been avoided. He remarked, “We need to thoroughly investigate why we could not participate in the World Cup and where our sports diplomacy fell short.”
He emphasized that this issue extends beyond the tournament itself, highlighting deficiencies in Bangladesh’s international sports relations and decision-making processes.
The government is also linking this investigation to alleged irregularities in the recent BCB elections. According to the minister, several stakeholders at the club and district levels have filed complaints, which are already under review.
Recently, the BCB had appealed to the ministry to close the previous investigation, but the announcement of a new inquiry the following day has revealed growing tensions between the board and the government.
The controversy began when the BCB cited security concerns as the reason for its refusal to participate in the tournament. Despite multiple rounds of discussions with the ICC, the board maintained its stance, leading to Bangladesh’s exclusion from the tournament. Scotland was subsequently included in their place.
