13 killed, 16 missing in China’s severe storm ‘Lekima’, Red alert declared

Beijing : 13 people died and 16 others went missing after storm ‘Lekima’ hit China’s eastern coastal area on Saturday. In anticipation of Lekima’s landfall, the Chinese weather bureau issued a red alert on Friday morning, warning residents of the threat for strong winds, heavy rainfall and coastal impacts.

The country has a four-stage color-coded warning system, with red representing the most severe weather.Thousands of trees have fallen and one million people had to come out of their homes.

The National Meteorological Center issued an Orange Alert before the storm arrived. The center told that Hurricane Lekima is the ninth storm this year. The storm reached Wenling city at a speed of 187 kilometers per hour and is now expected to reach Shanghai.

According to the administration, apart from Shanghai, there is a possibility of heavy rains in the eastern provinces of Fujian, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang. In view of this, 300 flights have been cancelled in Zhejiang Province .
